YOU DID IT!

IT COULDN’T BE DONE

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,

But he with a chuckle replied

That “maybe it couldn’t” but he would be one

Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin

On his face. If he worried he hid it.

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Poem by Edgar Guest

Edgar Albert Guest (1881- 1959) was a British-born American poet who became known as the People’s Poet. His poems often had an inspirational and optimistic view of everyday life. Most often, his poems were fourteen lines long and presented a deeply sentimental view of everyday life. He considered himself “a newspaper man who wrote verses.” Of his poems he said, “I take simple everyday things that happen to me and I figure it happens to a lot of other people and I make simple rhymes out of them.”

REFLECTION:

  • What have you done that others said couldn’t be done?
  • Is there something you “believe” can’t be done?
  • Can you go at it again… this time singing as you tackle it?

EXPANDING YOUR WORLD

I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world.

Quote by Rainer Maria Rilke

René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 – 29 December 1926), better known as Rainer Maria Rilke was an Austrian poet and novelist. He is “widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets”. He wrote both verse and highly lyrical prose. Several critics have described Rilke’s work as “mystical”.

REFLECTION:

  • How often do you reach outside of your comfort zone?
  • What is something you can do to widen your circle… stretch yourself today?

LOVING TODAY

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

Quote by Lao Tzu

Lao Tzu, also rendered as Laozi and Lao-Tze, was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, the founder of philosophical Taoism, and a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions.

REFLECTION:

  • Who has deeply loved you and thereby gave you strength?
  • Who have you deeply loved and you have courage because of them?
  • Can you thank them for what they have given and for what you have received?
